Always research road conditions, and if the hot springs are still open, before you hit the road. Even with all the great online sources, books are still a great thing to have, especially when you're on the road or hiking in the boonies!

11/22/2000- Howdy, If this is the soda spring in the east end of Clear Lake, it has come to an early demise. The government (BLM?) has filled the soaking pool with boulders after realizing that about a dozen people have died here in the past 20 years. I soaked in this tup once many years ago when the lake level was low, so was the water in the tup. This caused a buildup of co2 in the air in the tub. After being in for about 1 minute I felt light headed and was able to get out before passing out. My wife, the only other person on the island would NOT have been able to pull me out. This was my most harrowing experience ever at a hot spring. The water was not really hot about 75-85%, however it was pretty neat sitting in a big tub of BUBBLING SODA WATER. (Much like Calistoga Mineral Water.)

Soda Springs has not been filled in by boulders. The Pomo Indians fought this because it is sacred to them. There is a big scary warning sign (which everyone ignores). There was a death here due to asphyxiation because a local got drunk and fell asleep too close to the rising sulpher steam. Soda Springs can easily be reached by kayaking to the small island where it is located. I have been there as recently as 2008and many people were still boating up to soak. Suggestion: Bring a scrub brush to scrub the tub!!!
