Keough Hot Springs (REOPENED!)

CA Central East California Central East

Developed resort under new management and reopened. Don't confuse this with the 'Keough's Hot Springs Ditch' which is nearby. The Ditch is reputed to be more of a party spot, and more undeveloped.

See the bottom of the comments section, for the latest details and updates.

4/25/2002- I just found your website - thanks. We like Keough Hot Ditch, south of Bishop when we are traveling with my 6 year old daughter. There are enough pools along the ditch that you can usually have some privacy. The water temp gets cooler as you get further downstream; I've found that kids like a little cooler temp than adults. This spring is clothing optional, but I've often seen families (in suits) with children.

I have seen several negative book reviews on this spring. The authors visit during the day which is why.

Our experience:
During day the gates from the above resort are closed. Minimal water in the creek, and it is only warm and quite shallow. Fine for daytime use with swim suits for kids. Warning: a local told us his friend was badly cut by broken glass. Suggest wearing boat or tennis shoes in the water. Some people party here, and there are cans and bottles in the parking area. It would be nice if locals could provide trash cans. Short of that, the solution is for all of us who love natural springs to take out more trash than we bring in, which is what we always do and we feel good about doing that. You can park 50 feet from the stream's pools which are in an easy access ditch, with several dammed pools.

Please pick up any trash, and leave the place cleaner than you find it! Fantastic soak at night. Usually gates are opened after 7:30 PM. Easy 2 minute hard surface road access from HW395. Keough exit is about 7-8 miles south of Bishop. Lots of ski and mountain climbing people stop here.

There are several pools so privacy is great. Clothing optional at night, with a few shy souls wearing textile.

Quick note, the resort/campground is no longer closed. The Brown family recently bought Keough's and are working to restore the cabins and bath-house.

My family just spent a weekend here and we had a great time. The staff was courteous and friendly, the landscaping well tended (healthy trees and grass go a long way toward making those high 90s temps more bearable). The pool was huge and perfectly cooled (cool water is mixed with the natural hot springs water to create a comfortable swim) and huge. And for those seeking a true -hot- spring experience, the wading pool was perfect. Non-swimmers such as my grandmother (who has mobility problems due to a car accident before my time) are still able to enter the pool and I witnessed a few of them using typical garden chairs (provided) to sit and soak their feet while others, such as myself, sat on the bottom to get the full soak.

We'll be coming back next year!

P.S. - Don't confuse this with the 'Keough's Hot Springs Ditch' which is nearby. The Ditch is indeed a party spot, though thankfully their music/merrymaking did not disturb those of us camping/trying to sleep at the resort.
