Always research road conditions, and if the hot springs are still open, before you hit the road. Even with all the great online sources, books are still a great thing to have, especially when you're on the road or hiking in the boonies!

12/30/2002- It's late December '02 and just got back from a weekend at Buckeye and Bodie. Wow. Buckeye is an easy 3 mile ski/snowshoe from the trailhead. Water temp was fantastic, but the single board bridge to the hot springs was iced over and a bit of a treacherous walk from our campsite.

12/29/99Over the years, my family and I have stopped in at Buckeye and have really enjoyed it. There are two "springs". One on the north side of the canyon, down-canyon from the camping area, perched like a swallow's nest on the steep hillside, under a juniper tree. Its small (~ 4 people max capacity), but very nice. The other is the hot water fall into the creek. Its configuration is highly variable, as the level of the creek determines the pool's temperature and even if you can get to it. Last time we were there was during the spring runoff. There was a boiling hot gusher flowing down the travertine outcrop into a raging torrent. Not exactly a comfortable arrangement. The campground is primitive, but very nice. We've camped there spring, summer and winter. Although 4 wheel drive is VERY helpful if there's snow.

06/20/98- Just got back from Bridgeport and went to buckeye. Pool got washed out since last year and was built into one large pool. still a nice place to see but not as nice as last year. Not alot of people this year though. Very steep incline to get to large bottom pool.
