Always research road conditions, and if the hot springs are still open, before you hit the road. Even with all the great online sources, books are still a great thing to have, especially when you're on the road or hiking in the boonies!

Tecopa Hot Springs is run by the county, and is divided into separate men's and women's bath houses. It's open 24 hr. and there's no fee. There's a large changing room. and a lounging area as well. The hot pool is cement, and of ample size. Several campgrounds are located across the highway. "Deelight's Hot Spa" is less than a mile futher down the road. They offer cabins, RV Parking and a few tent spaces. There are five separate bathhouses, first come basis. One is open to the sky. The tubs are large and clean. China Ranch Date Farm is located nearby, and worth the visit.

I was there in spring 2002 and found the water excellent and well worth looping up through Baker for. Invigorating and refreshing, a relaxing three-hour soak and nap easily propelled me to drive on through Death Valley.
This is a county-maintained facility that commands self-discipline and respect of visitors. There was a lot of discussion of misbehavior and fear that continued misuse could lead to shut down.
Please, if you go, remember this is NOT a bath house pickup scene or party house; this is a medicinal hot spring. This is sacred water.

The county springs are now managed by California Land Management, a private company, and it is no longer free. There is an active community centre and a library at Tecopa Hot Springs. The springs are separated into male and female with one private one. Nude is required.Large campground with lots of spaces avalable some with services, Sani dump.
It is a shame how California Land Management (not affiliated the state of) has run this beautiful desert destination into the ground with poor management non-existent customer service and basic corporate greed. Sadly the once full campgrounds are virtually empty. The few campers that do remain, after CLM’s exorbitant price increases, the belligerent camp hosts and the filthy, polluted baths, are leaving angrily, vowing never to return. As this leased county park becomes a losing venture for CLM they try to squeeze every last penny out of the remaining resources.
Elderly campers and the disabled on fixed incomes and the impoverished local residences are all there for “healing” waters, which are grossly overused and choking with chemicals. Since revenue from the campground is nonexistent, the baths have become sadly exploited. When Chief Tecopa gave this ancient Native American sacred site to the County of Inyo his one request was that it would remain free for all who used it. Well, poor Chief Tecopa would be devastated by the busloads of Las Vegas bound travelers and the “dailies”, crammed into the bathes at seven bucks a shot, and the amount of bromide it takes to attempt to clear the water. The greasy brown ring around the pools speaks for itself. The local residents and “the monthlies” (campers paying by the month) report urinary trace diseases, rashes and chemical burns from prolonged use of the “healing water”. Lastly, completing “the healing experience of Tecopa”, there’s the local mentally ill woman, who, while sadly is not on the medication which she so badly needs, is allowed to rage and scream at paying guests for hours daily. (Someone on the CLM staff owes her money).
Any request, suggestion or question regarding camping or bathing accommodations is met with sneering disdain from the hostile staff, “We can’t do anything about that.” That’s if the office isn’t locked up, since workers are always smoking cigarettes in back. Indeed, there is a cloud of smoke engulfing that office, and you can smell it all the way in the baths. Unfortunately, they fired the only guy who cleaned the bathrooms with any energy and even though he was a sleazy character, at least there was toilet paper on the weekends.
CLM’s managers go from bad to worse. Vic the sexual predator, left before the harassment lawsuits were filed. The next guy was taken away in handcuffs for embezzling and now poor incompetent Rose, whose unfaithful boyfriend has left her a sobbing angry mess. The “monthlies” give her a wide berth but thankfully she rarely comes to work.
Finally, to the west, visitors can enjoy the sunset view over the newly expanded sewage dumpsite, creating another source of income for CLM and named “Lake Shittychacha” by the “monthlies.” The sewage pond exudes an odor of o’ de’ poo-poo over the entire campground with the morning breeze, completing the ambiance of CLM.
There are several opportunities for hot springs soaking along Hwy 127, aka ‘the loop’ or Hot Springs Road. Tecopa Hot Springs Resort has private soaking rooms, a cool art gallery and amazing restaurant. Big RVs usually prefer to go to the Palms. And Delight’s Hot Springs Resort has been newly spruced up and has a lot to offer for the upscale experience
I am a life time “spring hopper” and camper who have spent several months at Tecopa over the last few years and I’m going to pass this leased County Park by for awhile. CLM has two more years on its contract with Inyo County, and then hopefully they will dry up and blow away and this once magnificent sacred ancient place can start to heal and fulfill its legacy. Visitors can camp without animosity or choking on tobacco smoke, again bath in clear clean pristine healing waters and honor this great gift given by the Shoshone.
I just tried to post a reply about California land management and it doesn't seem to show. I unfortunately was employed by them at the heart bar and wild horse equestrian camps in San Bernardino. CLM was criminally negligent. The camps were a total mess and the management could care less. The pristine water supply was so foul by the time I left you could not drink it. The Forest Service did not seem to care and instead spent their time harassing the campers. I hope the poster will try to contact me at the below website originally meant to praise CLM yet ended up exposing their negligence. I was eventually fired before the season is over because I could not take this abusive uncaring management or the constant complaints of the poor campers. It seems vice president red wood didn't like my style. I kid you not that was his name!

This is sad and unfortunate news. I was going to come visit and was hoping the tub by the tree down furnace creek rd was still soakable. Does anyone know if it is? After reading all the bad reviews on it I found The Shoshone Hot Springs...and it is a cement super nice pool with camping rv space and rooms to stay....if you want to use it for day use you can at a camping price which is only twenty dollars for two people.
